Michael Caine Sums Up My Feelings About Ebay

DAHLINGS:

I have been in a slough of despond (look it up) since closing down my Ebay store. I still have two large bins of handbags to be disposed of somehow, and numerous odds and ends. At the moment, this clip from the movie "Little Voice," starring Jane Horrocks and Michael Caine, speaks to my soul.

For those of you who have never seen the film, Michael Caine is a small-time promoter who discovers a girl who can sing like anybody, including Judy Garland and Shirley Bassey. But on the night of her big premiere, which has cost him all of his money, everything goes wrong. This is his response. Watch for Ewan MacGregor as the other male lead, and Brenda Blethyn.

There are many future endeavors beckoning to moi, including Full Figured Fashion Week in July! I shall be posting again soon, once the librium kicks in.

A Farewell To Ebay

DAHLINGS -

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that I have closed my Ebay store. I still have some listings up, but not for long.

Being an online seller on Ebay has long been an Orwellian nightware: higher fees are better for sellers; not being able to leave feedback for bad buyers is good for business and keeps the marketplace safe; and its most recent move, changing store listings into 30-day listings that cost 400% more and have to be re-upped every month. "Griff", the friendly, soulless face of Ebay, relentlessly ducks questions as he shills for the company.

Meanwhile, Ebay's reputation has plummeted. How many times have I been told that Ebay sellers are dishonest? Thieves? Misrepresenters of their product?

Other sellers have told me to move to Etsy.com or Bonanzle.com. I have nothing against these fine sites, but it is time for me to move on to other pursuits. I have a book to write, personal appearances to make, and as always, this blog-thing.

Tim Gunn Is The King of All Media!

DAHLINGS -

For more than a week, my horrific excuse for a computer has been RIDDLED with viruses, malware (whatever that is) and various other crazy-making things. I have been unable to read my email, get on Twitter, respond to press releases, etc. etc. For a woman who prides herself on being in the forefront of fashion's elite, I am humbled before the sheer evil of Windows.

However, while I collect what is left of my senses, I thought I would share with you one of the delightful post-episode commentaries by my BFF, Tim Gunn. This was posted a few minutes ago, and I hope you enjoy it. It is his commentary post-episode 12.

One can only hope it works. Otherwise, the screams will be hearable all the way down to the East Village.

Note To PR Companies: Please READ My Blog!

DAHLINGS -

This post title is not a request. Far from it. Being the insanely popular personality and fashion expert that I am (if I may speak modestly), I am deluged with requests for blog entries, interview requests, and marketing propositions.

The vast majority don't know one basic fact:

THIS BLOG IS WRITTEN BY A PLUS SIZE AND PROUD WOMAN.

Therefore, I will not endorse your fashion line that only runs up to a size 8. Nor am I interested in writing about your travel agency, your dieting tips and tricks, or ways to make cash fast.

Any email that begins "Dear Blog Owner" is instantly deleted. As are most emails that misspell my name and the name of my blog.

If I want to interview someone, I will ask them, not the other way round. Most of these requests have nothing to do with the content of my blog. Or, as in the case of one request, I will not write up a shop owner whose sells clothing to women (in the words of the pr person) "who may be...of a certain size?" Sounding as if you are ashamed to sell plus-size clothing is no way to get on my good side. And it does not help if I already know that the shop does not actually cater to plus sizes, unless you count ponchos.

I also do not give free advertising, as I have mentioned many times. This is not a product review blog. It might get more attention and be easier to categorize if it was, but I am simply not interested. I did not start this blog to pimp mascara. If you wish to advertise on my blog, ask for my rates, don't ask me to write a blog entry about your store/makeup line/whatever.

Yes, I write about products, stores and clothing, but it's only because I choose to for my own reasons. (The books noted on my sidebar are NOT paid advertising; Barbara Barnett is one of the best writers about House out there.)

Rant over.

I encourage PR companies to send me releases about fashion happenings, events, and parties. But please, I beg you, take twenty minutes out of your busy day and if nothing else, look at the titles of my entries and read my profile.

It will save both of us a great deal of trouble.
