Beatrice Arthur, R.I.P.

DAHLINGS -

I have very little to add to the reams of praise that have been written this week about the late Beatrice Arthur, star of television’s “Maude” and later “The Golden Girls.” She was that rare actress who found fame and success in mid-life, and it was well deserved.

Perhaps because of her height (5’9”, a rarity in the 1940s) and her strong features, Arthur’s unusual beauty was overlooked by casting directors. However, she met her husband, Gene Saks, in 1950 and worked consistently off-Broadway, including the 1954 original version of The Threepenny Opera.

Between jobs she sang in supper clubs, and appeared on Broadway, particularly the smash hit “Mame” in 1966, directed by her husband. For the part of Vera Charles, Mame's best friend, she received a Tony Award.

She was almost fifty when she first appeared on “All In The Family”, as Edith's liberal, women's libber cousin, one of the few characters who could go toe to toe with Edith's bigot husband Archie Bunker. The character was so well-received it led directly to the spin-off “Maude.” Maude was a dominant, outspoken woman, the likes of which had rarely been seen on television. Usually that type was played as a one-dimensional gorgon (and still is), but Maude had true emotional complexity. Part of that was due to Bea Arthur's brilliant portrayal and also the amazing writing. Most of the content could not get on television today, sadly enough.
The rest is history, as the cliché goes.

Arthur’s authorative comic timing, deep voice, and killer delivery were all her own. Beatrice Arthur, for deep-voiced, tall, imposing women everywhere, I salute you.

Only Three More Shows Left, Dahlings!

Dahlings -

Yet another lovely write-up, this time on the New York Theatre Corps blog!

http://newtheatercorps.blogspot.com/2008/03/frigid-08-diary-of-mad-fashionista.html

The reviewer calls it, among other things, "engaging," praises my performance, and says that my co-star, Shannon Sutherland, not only "shines" but has the best bio line in New York!

There are only THREE performances left, so hurry up and purchase your tickets! We have had a wonderful response from our audiences, and I guarantee you a very good time.

Rival-blasting, servant-bashing, she will stop at nothing for the perfect Dior!

DAHLINGS, I AM RETURNING TO THE STAGE!

DAHLINGS -

Rejoice! Let joy be unconfined! "Diary Of A Mad Fashionista" is coming to the Off-Off-Broadway stage, starring (of course) your faithful correspondent. After my stellar performance at the Broadway Comedy Club, it was fait accompli.

I know you're sitting bolt upright at your desk or cubicle or in Starbucks, yelling, "Tell me more!" aloud. (In fact, I just heard it coming from a limousine parked on the street below.)

"Diary Of A Mad Fashionista" opens on February 27, 2008 at the Red Room Theater, on East 4th Street in New York's ever-so-trendy East Village. The show is part of the Second Annual Frigid Festival. It is being directed by Aaron Haber, and costars Shannon Sutherland, playing a variety of roles. Bucky the Wonderdog unfortunately does not have an Equity card, so he will have to be played by a substitute. (Also, I would rather not risk having any audience members bitten.) Tickets are an amazingly reasonable $12.00. I tried to talk the producers of the Frigid Festival to raise the ticket price to $100, but they refused to listen. Something about the arts being accessible to everyone or some poppycock like that.

Of course I shall be writing more about this truly ASTOUNDING opportunity to see me live and in the creamy flesh, but for now you can go to this link:

www.frigidfest.com

And click on "2008 Performances". Look for the lovely pink logo indicating MY SHOW!

Pretties To Buy Tomorrow at My LIVE Appearance!

DAHLINGS -

As you know from the entry below, I shall be appearing LIVE tomorrow night, Thursday, January 17th, at the Broadway Comedy Club as part of The Three Tomatoes Comedy Event!

What you don't know is that I will be offering some gorgeous things for sale! And my latest personal assistant, a very competent young woman, will be helping out (you don't think I'd go onstage without having my things protected, do you? There will also be a bodyguard, but he will be extremely inconspicuous. Unless you try to snatch something off of my table. Then things could become...um...just a tad unpleasant.)

Here is a just a small sampling to tempt you, so remember to bring cash and your checkbook!

Vintage 60s mink hat:

Vintage micromosaic bracelet:

Vintage gold fabric purse with novelty close:

Antique Mother of Pearl cameo pendant:

Vintage Corocraft brooch:

A cornucopia of scarves, some New With Tags, by Burberry, Vera, Echo, and others, including this thick, luscious silk velvet double-sided shawl!

And oh, so much more! My assistant is laboring even as we speak to get everything in TOP condition! And I'm going to get my hair done...that is exhausting, dahlings!

See you tomorrow!

Elisa (sans Bucky the Wonderdog, I'm afraid, they have rules)

Elisa Jimenez Gets Her Just Desserts!

DAHLINGS -

More later, I am simply super-busy preparing for my LIVE appearance on January 17th at the Broadway Comedy Club. But aren't we all delighted that Spitting Earth Goddess got auf'd from this week's Project Runway! Even though I am ever the gracious, forgiving soul, I could not forgive that hideous outfit she put on Tracy!

Ciao,
Elisa & Bucky The Wonderdog

PS For more information about my rare LIVE appearance, please do click on the Three Tomatoes link on your right, and look for "comedy event"! Buy tickets, it's for ever SUCH a good cause!

Come See Moi on BROADWAY in January!

DAHLINGS –

SAVE THE DATE! As promised, you will be seeing moi, live and on stage, at the Broadway Comedy Club next month! I know how desperately so many of my readers want to see me in the creamy, lubricious flesh!
Here are a few of the pertinent details to whet your palate:

The Three Tomatoes
presents

Broadway Comedy Night

no good reason at all.
**********************************
Portion of proceeds goes to ComedyCures®
Date : January 17, 2008

Place:
The Broadway Comedy Club
318 West 53rd Street, (between 8th & 9th Ave.) New York City

• Sandwich bar catered by the world famous Carnegie Deli, featuring the best pastrami anywhere, and their signature cheese cake.
• Plus, unlimited wine, beer, and a special 3T martini (but of course.)

Entertainment: Media personality Valerie Smaldone, a six time Billboard Magazine Award winner, mid-day host of 106.7 Lite-FM and producer of our event, will also be our event host which will feature three fabulous comedians:

• Our comedy show emcee is Elisa DeCarlo, THE MAD FASHIONISTA, the second-most feared woman in fashion (after Anna Wintour, her personal idol). She is a plus-size New York City diva whose religion is couture and whose nightmare is Forever 21. Please address her as "Miss DeCarlo" or you will get hurt.
The lineup will also include two comics handpicked just for The Three Tomatoes, by The Broadway Comedy Club, whose visiting comics have appeared on Letterman, The Tonight Show, Saturday Night Live, Mad TV, Conan O'Brien, HBO, Showtime, Comedy Central, and BET.
**************

Frankly, dahlings, I'm not wild about being called a comedian, because Fashion is Serious Business. However, who am I to deprive the masses of the pleasure of being in my presence over mere terminology?

As an additional bonus, I will selling some of my finest vintage jewelry, including 14kt gold rings set with genuine pearls, designer silver brooches, and of course the finest in costume jewelry and vintage accessories. A portion of the proceeds will also go to ComedyCures, and Ms. Smaldone will make certain of that.

POINTLESS REBELLION Opens - An Outrage!

DAHLINGS -

I am speechless. Simply, utterly speechless. That doppleganger of mine (I believe she's a distant relative), Elisa DeCarlo, who simply REFUSES to change her name, is opening in a SHOW in NEW YORK (my city) this week!

I might have to stay indoors for the duration.

The show is called "POINTLESS REBELLION," and apparently, according to an email this creature sent me, it's about her life as an Ebay seller who has sold well-worn shoes to foot fetishists (as if I would ever do such a thing!!), and her relationship with her father, who was the president of Sarah Lawrence College. To quote the email:

From him, Elisa inherited manic depression and a desire to be onstage. An accomplished male drag artist, Elisa recalls her deep identification with and rebellion against her late father, who reluctantly chose business over show business.

Apparently this is a comedy, and this person has won a number of awards as a performer, in New York, San Francisco, and Chicago. How this has been going on without my knowledge is simply an outrage...

It will be opening at some place on the Lower East Side called the Red Room, as part of a theater festival called Frigid New York, co-produced by Horse TRADE and the EXIT Theatre of San Francisco. I might show up on opening night, Thursday, March 8 at 7:30pm, just to put this person in her PLACE!

If this sort of thing interests you, it is also playing on
Saturday, March 10 at 4 pm
Tuesday March 13 at 6 pm
Wednesday, March 14 at 9 pm
Friday, March 16 at 9 pm

Tickets are $12 (I tip more for my manicures!), half price for seniors and students with identification. No, not the kind that gets underage children into bars. For tickets one can go to www.smarttix.com, or call (212) 868-4444.

This pathetic creature added in her email to moi that discount tickets are available if you use the code BIGRED. Apparently that is the name of the...thing standing next to her. The show runs slightly under an hour, it reads.

I intend to be there opening night...will you??
